The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has abruptly suspended its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, instructing all Resident Electoral Commissioners to stop ongoing preparations with immediate effect.

The exercise, which was set to begin on April 13, was designed to clean up Nigeria’s voter register by removing duplicate entries, deceased individuals, underage registrants, and other ineligible names ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In line with the new directive, all publicity related to the exercise has been halted, and information about it has been removed from INEC’s official platforms.

The decision follows widespread concerns raised by political stakeholders and members of the public over issues such as timing, logistical challenges, and the potential risk of voter disenfranchisement.

Although the exercise has not been cancelled, it has been placed on hold, with officials directed to await further instructions. INEC has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the sudden move.
