Sir Humphrey Nwokolobia Agu, the composer, arranger and cultural preservationist credited with shaping modern Igbo choral and art music, has died at 90.
The news was announced in an obituary poster circulating online. Agu, recently died quietly, according to the notice.
Born Humphrey Nwokolobia Agu in 1936 in Nachi, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, he spent decades interpreting indigenous Igbo sound traditions through formal musical composition. Scholars of Nigerian music describe him and his generation as pivotal in preserving African musical identity by fusing Igbo idioms with Western harmonic techniques.
Agu is widely remembered for composing the soundtrack to the Nigerian television adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The score became closely associated with the drama, helping audiences connect with the rhythms and emotional textures of precolonial Igbo life.
His work also reached audiences through radio in the old Eastern Region, including the Anambra Broadcasting Service in Enugu. Listeners came to know him as a cultural voice whose compositions, such as Adamma and Ogbanjé, entered homes across the region and remain in memory decades later.
“His work helped ensure that Igbo music remained not only remembered, but lived,” Ogbuagu Anikwe made in a tribute to the departed, describing him as a custodian of Igbo sound traditions at a time when imported musical forms dominated public space.
Agu was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His artistic influence extended into his family. He was the patriarch of a musical household that includes award-winning singer and evangelist Obiora Nwokolobia-Agu, known as Obiwon, and gospel songstress Soluchi Ogugua, known professionally as Soluchy.
Tributes have come in from musicians, cultural enthusiasts and admirers who described him as a humble craftsman, mentor and cultural nationalist.
His funeral service will hold on Friday, 24 July 2026, at Umueshim Umubo in Nachi Community, Enugu State. Family, friends and admirers are expected to attend.
