Cancer Society Condemns ‘False Diagnosis Claim' By Blessing CEO, Calls For Probe

The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has condemned the alleged false cancer diagnosis claim by social media personality, Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, which was reportedly used to solicit financial donations from Nigerians.

In a press statement issued by its National Director of Publicity, Bashir Mohammed Ranccas, on Tuesday, the Society said its attention was drawn to widespread online reports alleging that the social media influencer appealed for public donations on the basis of having a serious cancer diagnosis, a claim now being questioned.

NCS said available information indicated that the public responded with significant financial support after Blessing CEO announced she was battling cancer. 

However, emerging details have cast doubt on the authenticity of the claim, with concerns that the public may have been misled and swindled.

The controversy has sparked nationwide reactions, including demands for accountability, refund of donations, and a full investigation.

Describing the alleged act of deceit as “deeply unfortunate, unethical, and detrimental to the fight against cancer,” NCS stressed that exploiting a life-threatening illness for personal gain undermines the integrity of genuine cancer patients and erodes public trust at a time when many Nigerians rely heavily on goodwill to access treatment.

The Society emphasised that cancer-related appeals require sincerity, compassion, and responsibility, warning that any misuse of such sensitive conditions could discourage potential donors from supporting legitimate cases.

NCS also revealed plans to contact relevant security agencies to ensure the matter is investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action was taken if wrongdoing is confirmed.

In its advisory to the public, the Society urged cancer patients and families to always seek verification, guidance, and support directly from the NCS when dealing with public fundraising or accessing care.

It noted that the organisation has a dedicated committee responsible for patient support and assistance coordination to ensure transparency and credibility.

The statement further called on donors, partners, and the general public to remain vigilant and channel support only through verified and legitimate platforms. The NCS reaffirmed that trust, accountability, and integrity are essential in the collective fight against cancer in Nigeria.
