Edoga Emerges Enugu NMA Chairman as BOT Charges Exco to Uphold Medical Standards

A new leadership has emerged for the Enugu State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), with Dr. Chima Edoga elected as the new Chairman.

The election was conducted through a peaceful and transparent electronic poll conducted on Saturday.

Chairman of the NMA Enugu Electoral Committee, Dr. Arinze Nwosu, announced that the election was conducted in line with the association's constitution, with voting held between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

He announced that Dr. Chima Emmanuel Edoga of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital secured 126 votes to emerge as chairman.

Other elected members of the executive committee include Dr. Ozo Christian Chiemeka as Vice Chairman, Dr. Forchu Ogochukwu as General Secretary, Dr. Solomon Obiadi Anigbamkpu as Assistant General Secretary, Dr. Chiamaka Maryrose Ebisi as Financial Secretary, Dr. Onyekachukwu Enweani as Treasurer, Dr. Agbo Benjamin Emeka as Publicity Secretary, and Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Malachy Uzorechi as Social Secretary.

Taking the oath of office, Dr. Edoga expressed gratitude to members of the association for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the state branch, pledging to run an inclusive and service-driven administration.

He described the Chairman of the NMA Board of Trustees, Prof. Sam Ohaegbulam, as a source of inspiration and assured members that the new executive would build on the achievements of previous administrations.

"We are here to serve. I believe in collective intelligence, and with over 2,000 medical doctors in Enugu State, we will raise the bar. We will work closely with the immediate past executive led by Dr. Sunday Okafor and ensure that the next two years are unprecedented," he said.

Edoga said his administration would focus on responding to the aspirations of members while contributing to the development of the state's healthcare system.

He also expressed the hope that Enugu would evolve into a destination for medical tourism through sustained collaboration within the medical community and support from stakeholders.

Calling for unity, he urged members to rally behind the new executive, stressing that the success of the administration would depend on collective commitment and God's guidance.

Chairman of the NMA Enugu Board of Trustees, Prof. Sam Ohaegbulam, commended the peaceful conduct of the election, describing it as smooth and credible.

He expressed confidence in the capacity of the newly elected officers, noting that several members of the executive were not new to leadership within the association and possessed the experience required to move the branch to greater heights.

Ohaegbulam, however, challenged the new leadership to strengthen professionalism and uphold the ethical standards of the medical profession.

According to him, the medical profession demands discipline, responsibility and adherence to high standards, adding that leaders of the association must lead by example.

He observed that the NMA deserved greater respect within society and maintained that exemplary leadership would inspire members to uphold the values and integrity of the profession.

The new executive is expected to steer the affairs of the Enugu State branch of the association for the next two years, with members expressing optimism that the administration will consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the welfare of medical practitioners while supporting improvements in healthcare delivery across the state.
