Before the Music: Remembering Onyeka Onwenu, the Fearless Reporter

Long before she became celebrated as the "Elegant Stallion" of Nigerian music and earned acclaim as a Nollywood icon, Onyeka Onwenu had already distinguished herself in another profession—as a courageous and accomplished journalist.

In the early 1980s, Onwenu built a reputation as one of Nigeria's most respected television reporters and documentary producers. Armed with sharp intellect, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the truth, she tackled difficult national issues at a time when investigative journalism demanded exceptional courage.

Her defining moment as a journalist came in 1984 with the landmark documentary Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches, produced in collaboration with the BBC. The documentary examined how Nigeria's enormous oil wealth was being squandered through corruption, poor governance, and economic mismanagement. Traveling across the country, Onwenu documented the realities of environmental degradation, poverty, and inequality, asking hard questions and holding those in authority accountable. The film remains one of the most influential investigative documentaries ever produced in West Africa.

Before joining the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Onwenu had worked with the United Nations in New York, bringing international experience and a broad worldview to Nigerian journalism. At NTA, she quickly became known for her professionalism, thorough reporting, and willingness to confront sensitive issues that many avoided.

In an era when journalism was largely dominated by men, Onwenu broke barriers, proving that women could excel in investigative reporting and handle the most demanding assignments with confidence and integrity. Her work inspired a new generation of female journalists to pursue stories of public importance without fear.

When she eventually transitioned into music, Onwenu did not abandon the ideals that had shaped her career in journalism. Instead, she found another platform to advocate for social justice, national unity, and human dignity. Many of her songs reflected the same commitment to truth, equality, and hope that had defined her reporting.

Onyeka Onwenu's remarkable journey reminds us that her legacy extends far beyond entertainment. Before the awards, the hit songs, and the acting accolades, she was a dedicated journalist whose reporting challenged injustice and amplified the voices of ordinary Nigerians.

Her story is a powerful reminder that journalism is not merely about reporting events; it is about serving society with courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the truth. Long before Nigeria celebrated Onyeka Onwenu the musician, it first knew Onyeka Onwenu the reporter—a woman whose voice sought accountability before it inspired generations through music.

Onyeka Onwenu died on 30 July 2024 at the age of 72. She collapsed shortly after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Emzor Pharmaceuticals founder Stella Okoli in Lagos. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. 

Onwenu is remembered not only as the "Elegant Stallion" of Nigerian music but also as an accomplished journalist, actress, broadcaster, activist, and public servant. Her 1984 investigative documentary, Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches, remains one of the landmark works of Nigerian television journalism.
