The Tricycle Riders Association of Enugu State has endorsed Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027, citing infrastructure development, improved security and government support for their businesses.
The endorsement came as Mbah scrapped the N750 daily ticketing fee imposed on commercial tricycle operators and extended their operating hours from 9pm to 10pm.
The governor also reaffirmed that tricycle operators would continue to use the state’s modern transport terminals free of charge.
Speaking at the conclusion of a “One Million March” rally at Okpara Square, Enugu, on Saturday, the state chairman of the association, Comrade Kingsley Edeh, said the endorsements reflected the impact of government policies on riders, their families and the wider population.
Edeh cited improved security, road construction, the 267 Smart Green Schools and the completion of previously abandoned projects, including the International Conference Centre, Hotel Presidential, Nigergas Limited and Sunrise Flour Mills.
He also commended Tinubu’s infrastructure projects in the South-East and support for governors in the region, declaring that the association would vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) across all levels in 2027.
The association’s National Secretary, Comrade Sunday Enang, described Mbah’s administration as transformative, citing the establishment of Enugu Air, construction of modern transport terminals, investment in an asphalt plant and road projects across the state.
Enang also commended the policy allowing tricycle operators to use designated transport terminals without paying tolls, describing it as support for their livelihoods.
Responding, Mbah described tricycle operators as critical contributors to the state’s economy, noting their role in transporting workers, students, traders and other residents.
He said his administration was committed not only to economic growth but also to reducing poverty and increasing residents’ disposable incomes.
“The issue of tickets is sealed. No more tickets for you,” the governor declared, announcing the abolition of the N750 daily fee.
Mbah attributed the extension of operating hours to improvements in the state’s security situation, noting that tricycle operators had previously been restricted to operating between 6am and 9pm.
On road infrastructure, the governor said his administration would pave all remaining 1,022 urban roads in the state, adding that work was ongoing in areas including Emene, Abakpa, Trans-Ekulu, Awkunanaw, Coal Camp, New Haven, Thinkers Corner and Uwani.
He said improved roads would reduce operators’ expenditure on repairs and the time spent maintaining their tricycles.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to preserving peace and security, warning politicians and other individuals against attempts to import thugs or disrupt public order ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We have zero tolerance for violence,” he said, adding that the government would use all lawful means to bring perpetrators to justice.
Mbah urged residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate in the 2027 elections.
Other speakers at the event included the Enugu State APC Chairman, Dr Martins Chukwunweike; Grand Patron of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Igwe Greg Ugwu; and Managing Director of Enugu East Zone Transport Terminals, Dr John Egbo.
