2027: Okorie Warns S-East Govs Over Rising Political Violence, Threat of Anarchy

Elder statesman and Chairman of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has sounded a stern warning to Southeast governors, urging them to act immediately to prevent the geopolitical zone from descending into a "theatre of war" ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded public statement issued on Monday, Okorie expressed deep concern over what he termed a dangerous trend of political struggle through conquest rather than the ballot box.
He criticized the rising wave of political intolerance, noting that opposition parties in the zone are increasingly being targeted and barred from holding public rallies or gatherings without facing attacks from armed thugs.
"It is no longer safe for members of the opposition parties to hold public gatherings or rallies anywhere in the geopolitical zone without being attacked by heavily armed thugs," Okorie stated.
He highlighted that the violent clashes often leave citizens with severe injuries and loss of life while security agencies appear helpless.
The IAD chairman also condemned the exorbitant fees imposed on campaign billboards by various Southeast state governments—reportedly running into hundreds of millions of naira—which have forced opposition parties to retaliate by tearing down ruling party billboards.
He described this cycle of destruction as a direct recipe for chaos.
Linking the current regional tension to broader national issues, Okorie recalled an earlier open letter he addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 12, 2026, warning against brewing anarchy and government silence on inciting rhetoric.
He specifically referenced unrebuked statements from Islamic cleric Sheik Sani Yahaya Jingir in Kano, which he argued emboldened political actors nationwide to act with impunity.
Directing his plea to the Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, Okorie called for an emergency meeting of regional governors to nip the deteriorating security architecture in the bud.
He warned that the current leadership would bear historical accountability if Igboland transformed into a conflict zone, noting that the region is still grappling with the unresolved scars of the civil war 56 years later.
"The colonial army could not conquer Ndigbo. Ndigbo survived the war of annihilation waged against us. Igbo votes for the 2027 elections can never be obtained by conquest."
The Igbo leader charged Ndigbo to remain vigilant in defending their democratic franchise as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
