The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State on Tuesday formally declared the results of its senatorial primary elections held across the state on Monday, with Senator Osita Ngwu, Senator Kelvin Chukwu and Chief Ikeje Asogwa emerging as candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections in their respective districts.

The results were announced at the APC State Secretariat in Enugu by the Chairman of the APC National Assembly Primary Elections Committee for Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Solomon Funkekeme, who commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the exercise.

Solomon expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primaries, describing the exercise as orderly and peaceful across the state.

“We’re satisfied with the conduct of the members of the party. The whole exercise went peacefully,” he said.

He commended Governor Peter Mbah for providing what he described as an enabling environment for the smooth conduct of the exercise and also praised the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Ben Nwoye, for his contributions towards the success of the primaries.

“I commend the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for providing the enabling ground for this peaceful election. I also commend the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Ben Nwoye, for his efforts, as well as members of the party in the state for conducting themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner,” Funkekeme added.

Announcing the results, he declared Senator Osita Ngwu winner of the Enugu West Senatorial District primary after polling 70,015 votes to emerge as the party’s candidate.

In Enugu East Senatorial District, Senator Kelvin Chukwu defeated his co-contestant, Nnaji Shalom Nwakaego, after securing 111,743 votes against Nwakaego’s 482 votes.

For the Enugu North Senatorial District primary, which featured four contestants, Chief Ikeje Asogwa emerged victorious with 125,089 votes out of the 152,886 registered party members in the district.

Other contestants in the Enugu North race included Dr. Ugo Ugwuanyi, who scored 736 votes; Chinazo Eze, who polled 782 votes; and Princess Edith Ugwuanyi, who secured 876 votes.

Speaking at the event, the APC State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, said the declaration ceremony was to conclude the process that began in the 260 wards across the state on Monday.

“We have come today to finalize what we started yesterday in the 260 wards for the senatorial election. Today they’ve come to announce the results,” he said.

Chukwunweike noted that Governor Peter Mbah also actively participated in the exercise and disclosed that the same committee that conducted the House of Representatives primaries also handled the senatorial primaries.

He further announced that the State House of Assembly primaries would hold on Wednesday, with the governorship and presidential primaries following Thursday and Friday respectively.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Senator Osita Ngwu thanked party leaders and members for the confidence reposed in them and praised Governor Peter Mbah for promoting unity and stability within the APC in Enugu State.

“I wish to respectfully thank Governor Peter Mbah for his commitment to the unity, stability and progress of the APC in Enugu State. His leadership and dedication to ensuring a peaceful process have greatly strengthened the confidence of our members in the party,” he said.

Ngwu also extended an olive branch to other aspirants who participated in the election, urging them and their supporters to work together for the success of the party in the 2027 general elections.

“Elections and primaries may come with competition, but at the end of the day, we remain members of one political family with a shared vision for the advancement of Enugu State and Nigeria.

“I respectfully call on all of you and all your supporters to join forces with us as we work together towards total victory for our great party in the 2027 general elections,” he stated.

The senator added that the party would campaign proudly on the achievements of Governor Peter Mbah, insisting that the administration’s performance had provided the APC with a strong platform ahead of the next elections.

“We are definitely leaning on the performance of Governor Peter Mbah to campaign and we’re doing that with pride because he has worked,” Ngwu said.

He assured party faithful and supporters that he would not betray the confidence reposed in him and called for unity and determination as the party prepares for the 2027 polls.
