Adeleke Wins Osun Governorship Election, Defeats APC’s Oyebamiji

Governor Ademola Adeleke has been declared the winner of the Osun State governorship election, securing victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.

Adeleke, who contested under the platform of the Accord Party, defeated his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the election held across the state on Saturday, August 15.

The State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, announced the final results at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the results declared by the Returning Officer, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815 votes.

Ogunwole subsequently declared Adeleke duly elected and returned him to office for another term.

Adeleke recorded victories in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo and Osogbo.

Oyebamiji, on the other hand, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun.

The Returning Officer said 1,010,684 voters were accredited, while 1,005,800 votes were recorded as total votes cast.

Of the votes cast, 985,079 were valid, while 20,721 votes were rejected.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes, according to the final results.

After representatives of the participating political parties signed the result sheets, Ogunwole formally declared Adeleke the winner.

He said the governor had satisfied the requirements of the law and was therefore declared duly elected and returned as the winner of the August 15 governorship election.
