A conglomerate of broadcast media organizations based in Enugu, Afia Media, has unveiled its philosophy of changing perceptions about Eastern Nigeria and driving development through ideas.

The group announced that it will commence the campaign with the maiden edition of "Uwa Bu Afia," an Afia Annual Lectures and Awards series coming up later this year.

Speaking at the press conference in Enugu to unveil the event logo, the MD/CEO of Afia Media, Chief Emeka Mba, said the platform was set up to “tell our own story” and shift the narrative about the East beyond trade and business stereotypes.

“For us in the East, I prefer us being referred to as Eastern Nigeria to South East. We have struggled with narratives and stereotypes, but this region has produced the likes of China Achebe, Chimamanda, Tech gurus, award-winning personalities, scientists, engineers and more. Yesterday we were known for trade, but we are also multi-talented. The narrative has to shift," Mbah said.

He disclosed that the event is themed "Trading Ideas for Development," will hold on November 26 2026 at the International Conference Center (ICC) Enugu and will feature lectures and awards ceremony to honour individuals and institutions making measurable impact in the region.

According to him, the lectures will bring together industry leaders to discuss issues affecting the region, including insecurity, political agitations, business practices such as the Igbo apprenticeship scheme (Igba Boi), and overall developments.

"The awards will recognize those who have kept faith in the region, with a selection committee guided by clear criteria centered on measurable impact, not wealth.

“Whatever you cannot measure, you cannot regulate. As media, we need to interrogate with lectures. Development must touch people from ideas,” Mba stated.

He noted that nominations will be open and that the awards will be inclusive of the physically challenged, youth and the elderly.

A Director in the organization, Mrs. Ijeoma Ezeaso, said that the conversation would not end with the event. “Some will continue with rural or urban developments, with music and what have you. Afia Media will leverage technology to keep igniting the spark,” she said.

Ezeaso added that "Uwa Bu Afia," meaning _‘The World is a Market’ is a concept and philosophy that illustrates that the world belongs to those who act.

General Manager of the organization, Mr. Nnamdi Obaya, disclosed that Afia Media has partnered with event firms for the programme. He said the media outfit is committed to actionable journalism that drives sustainability and probes what is holding the region back.

The organizers said the effect of the lectures and awards is expected to go beyond the South East and contribute to national discourse.
