ENUGU – In a significant move signaling a new era of political consolidation in Enugu State, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, hosted the newly elected State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, at his residence at the weekend.
The meeting marks a pivotal moment for the party following a period of intense restructuring that saw the APC absorb the entire structure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
The current political landscape in Enugu was reshaped by a series of high-profile events beginning in October 2025:
The resignation of the former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, amid allegations of certificate forgery, led to the dissolution of the Agballah-led State Executive.
Dr. Ben Nwoye was appointed to head a Caretaker Committee, which eventually supervised the congresses that produced the current executive.
Following Nnaji’s exit, the incumbent Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, defected from the PDP to the APC, bringing with him the entire PDP state structure.
Dr. Chukwunweike, who previously served as the PDP State Chairman, followed suit, resigning his former position to lead the newly unified APC structure in Enugu.
Reports have it that following his resignation, Uche Nnaji reportedly pressured Agballah to move the APC structure back to the PDP to facilitate Nnaji’s 2027 gubernatorial ambitions.
Hon. Agballah firmly declined, opting instead to align with the current administration.
Agballah cited Governor Mbah’s "high performance" and the need for "political stability in the state" as the primary reasons for his commitment to remain in the APC and support the Governor’s re-election in 2027.
Meanwhile, the political influence of the Enugu chapter of APC has grown on the national stage once more.
Dr. Ben Nwoye, with the active support of Governor Mbah, successfully defeated incumbent Chief Emma Eneukwu to emerge as the APC Deputy National Chairman (South).
During the courtesy visit, Barr. Agballah—leader of the influential Ebeaneje political family—expressed full confidence in Dr. Chukwunweike’s leadership.
"We discussed extensively on how to make APC Enugu a bigger and more inclusive party," Agballah stated.
"I believe Dr. Chukwunweike has the requisite experience and passion to successfully steer the wheel of the biggest political party in Enugu state to a resounding electoral success."
The visit concludes a week of strategic planning for the party as it prepares for the 2027 election cycle, now bolstered by a "collapsed" opposition and a unified leadership front.
