Aides Allege 'Northern Whisper Campaign' Against Peter Obi, Demand Evidence

The Peter Obi Media Office, POMR, has accused some individuals of running a covert "whisper campaign" against the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in northern rural areas ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement by POMR Spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, the media office said it has "credible intelligence" that Peter Obi, 2027 election, that false narratives about Obi’s relationship with Northerners during his tenure as Anambra State Governor are still being circulated at northern gatherings.

The statement described the claims as "malicious" and "falsehood," noting that Northern leaders in Anambra State had previously denied them and affirmed that Obi "was, and remains, a vital supporter of theirs both in and out of office."

"Despite clear facts, some individuals continue covertly planting these false narratives at Northern gatherings, hoping repeated claims will eventually seem convincing," the statement read.

POMR challenged those behind the campaign to "provide names, dates, records, and verifiable evidence supporting their allegations" and to "cease hiding behind whispered accusations and political propaganda."

The media office insisted that Obi governed Anambra "for all its residents, regardless of ethnicity or religion," and that his relationship with Northerners was not based on the allegations now being "fabricated for political gain."

Linking the timing to the 2027 polls, POMR said those unable to challenge Obi on "competence, integrity, and public service record" were resorting to "the oldest political weapon—ethnic suspicion and misinformation."

"We urge our brothers and sisters in the North to seek facts, not rumours; evidence, not whispers; and policies, not propaganda," the statement added.

The office concluded that "Nigeria cannot be rebuilt by weaponising lies that have long divided its people" and called for an end to the campaign.

"Enough of the lies. Let the facts speak for a new Nigeria that is Possible," it stated.
