A business mogul and renowned philanthropist, Chief Kingsley Chizoba Nweke has emerged the Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Enugu East Senatorial District of Enugu State.
A member of the PDP senatorial primary election Committee, Nnamchi George, declared Nweke winner with 42, 341 votes in an affirmative primary as the sole contestant.
Party members and delegates from the six local government areas that make up the district — Nkanu West, Nkanu East, Enugu South, Enugu East, Enugu North and Isi-Uzo participated in the exercise.
Delegates lined up to affirm his candidature in what party faithful described as a carnival-like atmosphere.
Speaking during the exercise held at Isi-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Chairman of the Senatorial Primary Committee, Hon. Marshal Okafor, described the process as peaceful and stressed that the party remained united.
According to him, the PDP in the state had no faction and was focused on consolidating its structure ahead of future political contests.
"We have no faction; the party is uniting everybody and ready to wrestle power from APC in the state," Okafor stated.
He also referenced the role of Nyesom Wike in the party's national leadership structure.
Responding after his emergence, Nweke said one of his major priorities would be establishing political enlightenment committees across the six local government areas in the district to educate citizens about their political rights and strengthen democratic participation.
He expressed concern that many citizens lacked awareness of their rights and often failed to demand accountability from elected officials.
According to him, his representation would focus on improving engagement between leaders and constituents while addressing developmental concerns such as roads, healthcare facilities and other critical infrastructure.
Nweke also criticized what he described as poor representation in the past, insisting that elected leaders should have visible projects and measurable impacts in their constituencies.
He assured supporters that tangible development initiatives would be pursued across communities within the district if elected.
The PDP candidate further thanked members of the primary committee, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party faithful and supporters for participating in the exercise.
Among those present at the event were Chief Vitus Okechi, Enugu State PDP Chairman; Hon. Magnus Edeh, PDP Vice Chairman for Enugu East Senatorial Zone; and John Chikezie Nnamdi, Chairman of PDP in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
