The African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency in Enugu state, High Chief Benjamin Chimaobi Eze, has condemned the rising cases of political violence targeting opposition rallies and meetings in Enugu State.

He warned perpetrators of the despicable politics against dragging the state back into an era of bloodshed and intimidation.

Eze, in a statement issued by his Media Office, expressed concern over the recent attack on a rally organised by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and alleged targeted assaults on gatherings of other opposition parties across the state.

He described the incidents as barbaric, unacceptable and a threat to democratic participation, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“It is utterly unfortunate, barbaric, and unacceptable that at this stage of our democratic journey, desperate politicians continue to resort to intimidation and violence that leaves innocent supporters with severe injuries,” he said.

Warning those responsible against further violence, Eze declared: “Do not take Enugu State back to Egypt. We will not sit back and watch our peaceful state turned into a theatre of bloodshed for your selfish ambitions.”

The ADC candidate maintained that political popularity should be built on hard work, verifiable performance and service delivery rather than coercion, thuggery or harassment of political opponents.

He argued that attacks on opposition gatherings reflected a lack of confidence in the electoral process, urging politicians who believed in their popularity to convince voters through their programmes and take their chances at the ballot box.

Eze also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to investigate the reported attacks, identify those responsible and prosecute them in accordance with the law.

He urged security operatives to ensure that individuals allegedly sponsoring political violence were not shielded from accountability, stressing that decisive action would help deter further attacks and protect the democratic rights of citizens.

Addressing constituents in Igboeze North and Udenu, as well as other residents of Enugu State, Eze appealed for calm and restraint, urging the public to remain law-abiding and resist attempts to intimidate or provoke them.

He reaffirmed his commitment to issue-based campaigns, democratic conduct and the protection of citizens’ rights and safety.

“Politics should be a contest of ideas, not a war,” he said, stressing the need for political actors to embrace peaceful engagement and respect the rights of opposing parties.
