EFCC Arraigns Enugu Woman Over Identity Theft, Faces Separate N19m Fraud Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Mbah Chidinma Sophina before the Federal High Court, Enugu, on charges of identity theft, forgery, and possession of fraudulent documents.

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC said that Sophina is facing the three counts before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo for possession of fraudulent documents.

EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in a press statement on Thursday, said that between Jan 1–Apr 30, 2026, Mbah allegedly possessed documents claiming she was Florence-Gweh Togba Doaryenneh, with intent to defraud and between Oct 1–25, 2023, she allegedly forged a Last Minute Healthcare card No. 03332408969 bearing that same name, where she allegedly assumed the identity of Florence-Gweh Togba Doaryenneh.

Sophina pleaded not guilty but the court remanded her at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Enugu and adjourned the case to November 19, 2026 for trial. Her counsel requested time to file a bail application.

Earlier than her remand in the prison, she had a separate Enugu State High Court case where the EFCC said Sophina is also facing trial before Justice C. A. Ogbuabor.

In that case, she was arraigned on two counts of stealing and obtaining by false pretence involving N19,084,000. She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. Trial for that case is set for September 18, 2026.

That case stems from a petition alleging that in 2024, the complainant met Sophina on TikTok and paid her N19,084,000 to procure a UK Certificate of Sponsorship for a caregiver job. 

The EFCC said she failed to deliver the documents and blocked him.

EFCC operatives arrested her after a search of her residence recovered an ID card bearing her photograph with the name Florence-Gweh Togba Doaryenneh.
