Ebonyi Group Threatens One-Million-Man Protest Over Elder Ubochi’s Killing

The Ebonyi Democratic Movement has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Ebonyi State Government to constitute a judicial panel of inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Elder Onwe Ubochi.

The group, led by Chief Igwe Emmanuel Chidi, warned that failure by the government to respond to its demand would trigger a peaceful one-million-man protest in Abuja under the banner, “Operation Occupy the National Assembly.”

Chief Igwe said the demand for an independent inquiry was rooted in the government’s responsibility to protect the lives and property of citizens, stressing that the circumstances surrounding Ubochi’s death, alongside other alleged politically related acts of violence, required a transparent investigation.

According to him, the proposed panel should establish the facts surrounding the killing, identify those responsible and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.

He urged Governor Francis Nwifuru to use the 14-day window to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to justice, accountability and the rule of law.

The group also warned that it could embark on a hunger strike as part of its campaign, insisting that all planned actions would remain peaceful and within the law.

“We are demanding justice, not vengeance; investigation, not speculation; and accountability, not impunity,” Chief Igwe said.

The Ebonyi Democratic Movement further appealed to political actors across the state to reject violence and support an independent investigation into Elder Ubochi’s killing and other incidents allegedly linked to political activities.

The group maintained that politics should not take precedence over the protection of human life, urging the state government to act before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum.
