Enugu Govt Confirms Disposal of Unserviceable Assets at ESBS, Water Corporation, Others
The government, however, clarified that the planned disposal does not involve the sale of the institutions, facilities or their operational premises
The Enugu State Government has confirmed that it is set to dispose of some government assets located at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), Enugu State Water Corporation, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the State Liaison Office in Lagos.
The government, however, clarified that the planned disposal does not involve the sale of the institutions, facilities or their operational premises, but only assets that have become unserviceable and are no longer useful to the state.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Nathaniel Urama, following a report circulating on social media concerning the proposed sale of government assets at the affected locations.
Urama acknowledged that the state government is indeed preparing to dispose of some assets at the facilities, but described the circulating publication as misleading because it gave the impression that the government was selling off the institutions and facilities themselves.
According to him, the official notice for the disposal had not been published as of Wednesday, August 27, and would be released through the appropriate government channels.
He explained that the assets earmarked for disposal are those that have become unserviceable and are no longer of practical use to the state government.
“The information is erroneous and it is neither from Enugu State Government nor the State Ministry of Finance. We, therefore, advise the general public to please ignore the message circulating in the media,” he said.
The Commissioner stressed that the disposal would be carried out in accordance with extant laws and due process, with interested bidders expected to obtain details of the assets from the Ministry of Finance and submit their bids as prescribed.
The development means that while the government has rejected claims that it is selling off ESBS, the Water Corporation, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium or its Lagos Liaison Office, it has confirmed that some obsolete or unserviceable assets within those locations are to be disposed of.
Urama urged members of the public and media organisations to distinguish between the disposal of individual government assets and the sale of government institutions or facilities, while calling for greater reliance on official channels for information on government activities.
He reiterated that details of the assets to be disposed of would be made public through the appropriate official channels when the formal notice is issued.
