The Enugu State Police Command has impounded 195 vehicles for violating the nationwide ban on unregistered vehicles and vehicles with improper number plates, with owners set to be prosecuted.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, led the enforcement exercise on Tuesday, across the state.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the impounded vehicles were found to be unregistered, or had covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized, or improperly affixed number plates. Others were operating with only one plate instead of the legally required two.

The vehicles were seized under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations and other extant laws. The affected owners will be charged to court and prosecuted accordingly.

CP Giwa said the operation followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to all State Commands to strictly enforce the ban. The IGP cited security risks posed by such vehicles, including their frequent use in criminal activities.

Giwa commended officers for conducting the exercise professionally and warned that enforcement would be sustained.

The Commissioner cautioned that any police officer found engaging in extortion, harassment, or misconduct during the operation would face severe disciplinary action.

He also urged motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized, or improperly affixed number plates to desist immediately and comply with the law, “except as permitted by law.”

The Enugu Command said the crackdown is part of broader efforts to improve road safety and security in the state.
