AWGU, ENUGU — The political landscape of Enugu State shifted significantly this weekend as political stakeholders from the Enugu West Senatorial District converged in Awgu Local Government Area for a mega-rally, formalizing their support for the re-election of Governor Peter Mbah for the 2027 general elections.
The rally, which drew thousands of constituents from Aninri, Awgu, Ezeagu, Oji-River, and Udi local government areas, reached its climax when the district’s representative in the Senate, Senator Osita Ngwu, presented a N100 million cheque to the Governor to cover the cost of his nomination form for the upcoming electoral cycle.
A Rally of Conviction:
Addressing the sea of supporters, Senator Ngwu emphasized that the district’s decision was rooted in visible, tangible results rather than political posturing.
"We are not here by accident but by conviction. We have seen leadership in action. We have seen results and real progress," Ngwu stated.
He pointed to the administration's infrastructure projects as proof that the Governor has fulfilled his campaign promises, declaring that the five local government areas in the zone have collectively agreed that Mbah is the best candidate to lead the state beyond 2027.
The motion for the Governor’s endorsement was formally moved by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Uche Ugwu, and seconded by Hon. Ede Magnus, representing Aninri State Constituency.
Dual Endorsement: Solidarity with the Presidency:
Beyond the state-level endorsement, the district also threw its weight behind the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The motion for the President’s endorsement was moved by Hon. Sunday Umeha, representing Ezeagu Federal Constituency, and seconded by former federal lawmaker, Toby Okechukwu.
Governor Mbah, in his address, described the event as “historic” and a “firm date with destiny.” He credited the synergy between his administration and the federal government for the successful execution of monumental projects across the local government areas.
From Critics to Supporters:
A notable feature of the rally was the public declaration of support from key figures who had previously opposed the Governor.
Former Enugu State APC chairman, Ugochukwu Agballah, who was a vocal critic of the Governor three years ago, publicly reversed his stance. Citing the completion of abandoned projects and the construction of world-class infrastructure—complete with integrated water lines, electricity, and fibre optics—Agballah pledged his full support.
"As I criticized you vigorously last time, I will campaign vigorously for you this time around," Agballah declared.
Adding to the momentum, APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Ben Nwoye, hailed the Governor as a "game changer," while current State APC Chairman, Martin Chukwunweike, affirmed that the Governor's performance record justifies a second term.
A Broad Coalition of Support:
The event was attended by a high-profile delegation, including former Senate President Ken Nnamani, members of the National and State Assemblies, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and representatives from various socio-cultural groups.
As the rally concluded, the message from Enugu West was clear: the district is strategically aligning itself for what Senator Ngwu termed a "mission of continuity, progress, and transformation" in the lead-up to 2027.
