Finally Finally, Supreme Court Sacks Ezza-Nkomoro from Onuogba-Nike

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has brought an end to a decades-long land dispute between the Onuogba Nike community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State and the Ezza Nkomoro migrant community from Ebonyi State.

Delivering judgment in Abuja on Friday, July 3, 2026, a panel led by Justice Abba Aji upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, affirming ownership of the disputed land in favour of Onuogba Nike community.

The ruling closes one of the longest-running communal land cases involving the two neighbouring communities.

Reacting to the verdict, former President-General of Onuogba Nike, Emmanuel Ubosi, described it as “a triumph of justice.” He said the judgment vindicated the community’s long-held position that the land was only given to Ezza Nkomoro people to settle under an agreement by their forefathers.

According to Ubosi, trouble began when the Ezza Nkomoro community allegedly moved beyond the areas originally allocated to them.  

“Places such as Ogbanu and Ndume were never part of the land made available to them. The problem started when they moved beyond the agreed boundaries,” he said.

He urged members of the Ezza Nkomoro community to accept the judgment and abide by the original understanding reached by both communities’ ancestors.  

“We urge them to accept the judgment in the interest of peace. If they fail to do so, we will take lawful steps to reclaim our land,” Ubosi warned.

The dispute reportedly resurfaced after portions of the land were sold by members of the host community, triggering fresh disagreements and renewed litigation.

As of press time, the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment had not been released. Efforts to get the reaction of Ezza Nkomoro representatives were unsuccessful.
