Greater Awgu Leaders Demand Emergency Fix As Erosion Cuts Off Oji-Awgu Federal Road

Leaders from Greater Awgu in Enugu West Senatorial district, have called for urgent intervention after severe erosion washed away a major section of the Oji–Awgu Federal Road following heavy rainfall on Friday night. The collapse has cut off vehicular movement and isolated several communities in Enugu State.

Anayo Onwuegbu, member of the House of Representatives for Aninri/Awgu/Oji River, led an emergency inspection of the damage on Saturday. He described the incident as alarming and said he had warned about the growing erosion threat on the same road less than 48 hours earlier.

Onwuegbu urged the Federal Ministry of Works to treat the situation as an emergency and act immediately to restore connectivity and reduce hardship for residents and commuters.

Oji River Local Government Chairman, Greg Anyaegbudike, praised the lawmaker’s swift response and his role in bringing the Federal Controller of Works to the site. He called for continued engagement with the ministry to secure approval for urgent reconstruction.

Federal Controller of Works in Enugu, Smart Emesim, attributed the damage to improperly terminated culvert outlets that intensified water flow and weakened the road embankment. He assured residents that the ministry would begin processes to address the crisis without delay.

The team also assessed four other erosion-prone locations along the road, highlighting the worsening threat to infrastructure in the area.

The tour included Oji River State Assembly member Osita Eze and Awgu Council Chairman Uche Okolo. Stakeholders ended the visit with a renewed commitment to pursue immediate repairs and long-term measures to safeguard lives, property, and transportation on the strategic federal road.
