The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has debunked reports claiming he had been asked to resign over alleged health concerns, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The governor’s reaction followed an online publication alleging that he had been directed to step down on medical grounds, with his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, expected to assume office and complete the remainder of the tenure.

In a statement released on Monday, the governor’s media team firmly denied the report, insisting that there was no truth to the claim that he had been ordered to resign.

The statement, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, stated that Sanwo-Olu remains in good health and continues to discharge his official duties without any hindrance.

The rebuttal comes amid widespread speculation triggered by an online platform which cited unnamed sources within the presidency, alleging that Bola Tinubu had asked the governor to step aside due to health reasons.

According to the report, Hamzat was being positioned to take over and possibly emerge as a frontrunner for a fresh four-year mandate in the 2027 elections.

It further claimed that key figures within the presidency were dissatisfied with the current leadership in Lagos and had begun moves toward a political transition.

Sources quoted in the report also alleged growing political tension, accusing the governor of insubordination within party ranks, including purported efforts to build independent political structures seen as challenging established influence in the state.

Additional claims linked the governor to alleged moves to unseat the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, as well as disputes over control of strategic assets—allegations that remain unverified.

However, the Lagos State Government has dismissed all such claims, reiterating that the governor remains fully in charge and focused on governance.
