The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Enugu State Council, has resolved an alleged rift with some media practitioners during the coverage of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections conduct, on Sunday.

Newsmen has alleged obstruction from coverage of the event by a House of Representatives member, Rt. Hon. Nnolim Nnaji in Enugu, resulting to misunderstanding at the venue.

The NUJ said it has investigated the matter, noting that it was a misrepresentation of Nnaji other than attack on journalists.

In a press update, on Monday, the Chairman of NUJ in Enugu state, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, said that fresh information showed the incident stemmed from the mode of communication at the venue, heightened emotions, and tense moments during the exercise.

According to the council, Hon. Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, did not attack journalists as initially reported. Instead, he advised that space be created for visibility during the conduct of the candidates’ victory procession at the party primary.

“The misunderstanding is highly regretted,” the council stated, calling on journalists, political actors, supporters, and the public to deescalate and avoid actions or statements that could increase tensions.

The NUJ said Nnaji agreed that journalists are professionals carrying out constitutional responsibilities in the public interest and should be accorded respect, access, and protection in discharging their duties.

The council emphasised that the media and public office holders are partners in deepening democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing development.

It also acknowledged the intervention of APC Enugu State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, who it said made efforts to contain the situation as events unfolded.

NUJ Enugu urged all parties to uphold democratic values, civility, and respect for press freedom in future engagements.
