Obi Never Said Military Should Reject Salary Increase — POMR

The Peter Obi Media Relations team (POMR) has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media claiming that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, asked Nigerian military personnel to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.

The POMR spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, in a statement on Tuesday, described the report as a deliberate misrepresentation of Obi’s position, accusing his political opponents of fabricating statements and attributing them to the former Anambra State governor.

Zekeri said Obi had personally addressed the issue on his X handle, making it clear that he never asked soldiers to reject salary increments.

According to Obi, “I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue.”

He reaffirmed his respect for Nigeria’s security forces, particularly personnel of the Nigerian Army, for their sacrifices and commitment to protecting the country under difficult circumstances.

Obi also reiterated his position that security personnel should be adequately equipped, motivated and protected while carrying out their duties.

“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said.

He added that his concerns about the welfare and safety of Nigerian soldiers had been consistent, pointing to instances where troops had reportedly been exposed to danger because of delayed rescue efforts.

“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” Obi stated.

The NDC presidential candidate further pledged that, if elected President, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of members of the armed forces would receive priority under his administration.

“Those who ensure Nigeria's security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he said.

Obi assured that under his leadership, situations in which Nigerian servicemen and women are left exposed to danger without adequate protection would be eliminated.

He consequently urged Nigerians to disregard the report alleging that he opposed or sought to delay salary increases for military personnel, describing it as misleading.

The POMR spokesman said Obi remained committed to presenting what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.

“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed POSSIBLE,” Obi said.
