Peter Obi has named former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, cementing a high-profile alliance between two of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.

Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, announced the selection on Saturday, confirming the ticket that had been widely speculated in political circles. The pairing is expected to lead the ADC’s campaign into the 2027 race, combining Obi’s national reformist appeal with Kwankwaso’s strong base in the North-West.

The development marks one of the most significant opposition mergers ahead of the election cycle. Both men commanded large voting blocs in 2023: Obi led the Labour Party’s surge in the South and urban centres, while Kwankwaso’s NNPP won Kano and made inroads across northern states.

Their alliance reshapes early calculations for 2027 and positions the NDC/ADC ticket as a formidable challenger to the ruling APC.

Party officials said the Obi-Kwankwaso combination is intended to broaden the opposition’s reach across regions and demographics.

Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence and two-term governor of Kano, brings deep grassroots structure in the North, while Obi retains strong support among youth and middle-class voters nationwide.

The announcement sets the tone for what is shaping up to be a tightly contested presidential race, with realignments now accelerating nearly two years before the polls.
