Peter Obi Group Accuses APC of Intimidation, Political Violence in Enugu
POMR alleged that electoral pressure was exposing what it described as the APC’s growing panic, insisting that political parties should seek public support through their records and performance rather than intimidation
The Peter Obi Media Relations (POMR) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of contributing to an atmosphere of political intimidation in Enugu State, calling for an impartial investigation into alleged politically motivated killings, threats and attacks.
The group said the reported incidents posed a threat to democracy and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of political affiliation or position.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, POMR alleged that electoral pressure was exposing what it described as the APC’s growing panic, insisting that political parties should seek public support through their records and performance rather than intimidation.
Titled “As Electoral Reality Confronts a Panicky APC, Democracy Is Under Attack in Enugu State,” the statement condemned reports of intimidation and violence in the state, describing the loss of citizens’ lives for electoral gain as unacceptable.
“If the APC has accomplishments to present, it should disclose them to Nigerians. If it enjoys the people’s confidence, it should face them at the ballot box,” the group said.
POMR maintained that violence, threats and intimidation could not replace competent governance or serve as substitutes for winning public confidence through constructive ideas and demonstrable achievements.
The group called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the reported violence in Enugu, urging authorities to establish those who allegedly ordered, funded, facilitated or carried out the attacks.
It also cautioned against what it described as political concealment and unchecked denials, stressing that investigations must be conducted impartially and without fear or favour.
“ Holding public office must never shield anyone from justice, and political affiliation must never determine whose life is valued or who is held accountable for a crime,” the statement said.
The opposition group further urged electoral and law enforcement authorities to take preventive measures against political violence, protect opposition candidates and their supporters, and guarantee citizens’ freedom to participate in the democratic process without fear.
It said victims and their families deserved justice, while the public was entitled to transparent explanations from the relevant authorities.
POMR warned that no governor or political party should be considered above the law, insisting that no political ambition could justify the loss of human life.
The group also urged opposition members and supporters to resist attempts at intimidation through lawful, peaceful and democratic means, rather than abandon their constitutional rights in the face of threats.
“Our message is clear: account for your record, answer for your conduct, and face the Nigerian people—not the barrel of a gun,” the statement declared.
POMR said Nigeria needed leaders who earned public trust through results, respected human life and upheld the rule of law, adding that electoral contests should not degenerate into violence.
The allegations in the statement were not accompanied by details of specific incidents, victims or suspects. The group called on the relevant authorities to investigate the claims and ensure accountability for any offences established.
