Obeagu Ugwuaji, Enugu community in turmoil over leadership crisis
The Obeagu Ugwuaji community in Enugu south local government of Enugu State has been thrown into strife over disagreements in the composition of the Town Union
Executive committee.
The matter has threatened to commit to prison through contempt proceeding, the State commissioner for Local government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, for constituting a caretaker committee for the Town Union in contravention of an order of the Enugu State High court.
Justice Chinweike Ogbuabor of the Enugu State high court had on June 2 2025, issued an injunction prohibiting the state ministry and it's commissioner, Ogbodo, among others from constituting a caretaker committee of the Obeagu Ugwuaji Development Union pending the determination of the substantive application for Judicial Review.
But Ogbodo allegedly violated the court order and constituted a caretaker committee for the Town Union. The commissioner however
said the action had taken place before the receipt of the notice of injunction.
The President General of Obeagu Ugwuaji Development Union, Mr Obi Chukwunomso among others had filled an application for a judicial in a suit NO: E/508/2025 and was granted.
The community leader alleged that in flagrant disobedience to the order of the court, the commissioner purportedly moved ahead to constitute a caretaker to pilot the community, necessitating the contempt proceedings.
The President General alleged that the commissioner upon receiving the order backdated the appointment letters of the purported caretaker committee to give it legitimacy.
