Vice President Kashim Shettima has reviewed Nigeria’s priorities and planned engagements at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, UNGA81, in New York.

Shettima held a briefing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, ahead of the high-level sessions.

The meeting focused on Nigeria’s key priorities, diplomatic engagements and expectations for the UNGA week, which runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

Shettima is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the global gathering, where Nigeria is expected to engage world leaders and other stakeholders on issues affecting the country and developing nations.

Speaking during the briefing, the Vice President said Nigeria would use the UNGA platform to advance its national interests, strengthen multilateral cooperation and push for reforms that would give developing countries a stronger voice in global affairs.

He said Nigeria’s participation would also provide an opportunity to deepen international partnerships and promote cooperation on issues of common interest.

The briefing brought together senior government officials involved in Nigeria’s participation at the global forum, including several governors and members of the Federal Executive Council.

Among those in attendance were the Ministers of Solid Minerals Development, Women Affairs and Education, as well as the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning.

Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also attended the meeting.

The UNGA week provides Nigeria with an opportunity to present its national priorities before the international community and engage other countries on economic development, multilateral cooperation and reforms within the United Nations system.
