Dr. Goodluck Jonathan

All is not clear yet if former President Goodluck Jonathan may declare for a 2027 presidential bid in Bayelsa state today.

A source who is close to Jonathan and who is already in Bayelsa confirmed his waiting and monitoring for the former president's action today.

He said, "Everything being equal, I hope to believe he will."

Though Jonathan has not officially declared that he will run for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, what has changed recently is that he has begun responding more openly to growing political pressure and public calls for a comeback.

In the past few days, Jonathan said he would “consult widely” before deciding whether to contest. There are several signs fueling the speculation: Support groups and political coalitions are openly urging him to run.

Reports say meetings and consultations are happening within opposition circles. A court case about whether he is constitutionally eligible for another presidential run is already being discussed publicly.

Legally, many analysts argue Jonathan may still be eligible because he completed only one elected presidential term after first assuming office following President Yar’Adua’s death.

That said, there is still major uncertainty: Jonathan has not picked a party. There is no campaign structure has been formally announced. Some reports and allies close to him previously denied he had active presidential ambitions.

Speculations are however strive that Jonathan may choose his original platform, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or another new political platform he allegedly sponsored its registration.

For now the former president has left the door open for 2027, fueling breath-taking speculations, but is yet to officially entered the race.
