A group of political veterans, the grassroots mobilizers, and ward leaders from Enugu North Senatorial Zone have accused political elites of sidelining long-standing party faithful after elections, vowing to “take their destinies in their hands.”

The group, operating under the banner “Aggrieved Political Veterans,” met in Nsukka to review what it described as the persistent neglect of stakeholders who have delivered electoral victories in the zone.

In a communiqué signed by the Chairman, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwujah; and Secretary Barr. Linus Eze Uroko, the group said it was ending what it called the practice of leaders nominating children, cousins, in-laws, and friends for elective positions and appointments after elections, only to return during campaigns to seek support.

“That era is gone. And we say enough is enough,” the group stated.

The veterans expressed disappointment over what they termed “continuous marginalization, neglect, and abandonment” of those who mobilize voters at the grassroots.

They condemned what they described as a growing trend where a few political elites hijack the benefits of collective struggles while those who worked during campaigns are “ignored, used, and dumped” after victories.

The group resolved to remain united and to consult with relevant stakeholders to push for justice, equity, and political inclusion. It also said the interests and welfare of grassroots mobilizers and veterans must henceforth be prioritized in political arrangements and governance decisions.

“We caution against politics of manipulation, exclusion, arrogance, exploitation and deceit. The practice of manipulating the people of Enugu North Senatorial Zone by a few people has today come to a stop,” Ugwuaji said.

The group warned that attempts to sideline loyal party faithful would no longer succeed, saying “the serpents are planning to creep in again to destroy the fortunes of Enugu North Senatorial Zone for their selfish interests.”

The veterans reaffirmed their commitment to democracy, peace, and development in the zone and called on members to remain vigilant ahead of future political activities.

Enugu North Senatorial Zone comprises Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Igbo-Etiti, Uzo-Uwani, and Udenu local government areas.
