Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, on Thursday visited kidney patients and other medically vulnerable Nigerians gathered at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, Enugu.

The visit followed a humanitarian appeal by social media personality Emmanuel Okwuluora.

More than 500 kidney patients and other people in need of medical assistance were reportedly assembled at the hospital through Okwuluora’s humanitarian initiative, as they seek financial support to continue treatment, particularly, dialysis and other care associated with chronic kidney disease.

Obi made an unscheduled visit to the hospital, where he met with some of the patients and families and witnessed firsthand the difficulties confronting people struggling with kidney-related illnesses.

The visit was largely humanitarian in nature, with patients and their relatives appealing for urgent financial and medical assistance to enable them to continue treatment.

Obi also expressed support for Okwuluora’s efforts to assist Nigerians facing serious medical challenges and pledged his continued support for the humanitarian initiative.

Okwuluora has in recent months used his social media platforms to mobilise funds for patients who are unable to settle medical bills or afford critical treatment. His activities have included appeals on behalf of kidney patients and other stranded patients at Parklane.

Okwuluora’s had sought for instance on patients at Parklane who had been discharged but were unable to pay their bills to come forward for assistance, with ₦5 million reportedly made available for medical bills at the time.

The latest gathering has again drawn attention to the growing burden of kidney disease and the affordability of dialysis in Nigeria, where treatment costs can place severe financial pressure on patients and their families.

The intervention also recalls Obi’s previous humanitarian involvement in medical cases in Enugu. 

In January 2023, he paid about ₦1 million to settle the medical bill of an abandoned patient, Blessing Usulor, who had undergone treatment that included dialysis after suffering renal failure.

For the patients at Parklane, however, the immediate concern remains access to sustained treatment and the financial resources required to keep them alive.

The gathering has consequently renewed calls for greater government and private-sector intervention in kidney care, including improved access to dialysis, affordable treatment and stronger support for patients who cannot meet the cost of care.
