2027: G100 Raises Alarm, Proposes 'Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition'

A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians under the banner of G100 has issued a stirring call for the unification of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that Nigeria's democracy is at risk if political leaders continue to place personal ambition above national interest.

In a strongly worded open letter titled "The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition," the group declared that the country has reached a defining moment where silence, neutrality and political complacency have become dangerous to the nation's survival.

Addressed to opposition leaders, statesmen, civil society organisations and Nigerians of good conscience, the letter paints a grim picture of the country's current realities, arguing that Nigeria's crisis goes far beyond economic hardship.

According to the coalition, the nation's deepest problem is a political structure that rewards loyalty instead of competence, patronage instead of service, and power instead of accountability.

The group lamented that millions of Nigerians now work harder than ever yet struggle to survive, insisting that sustainable economic recovery cannot be achieved without first rebuilding the country's democratic institutions.

G100 warned that while the ruling party continues to consolidate political power, the opposition has become consumed by internal divisions, rival ambitions and personal calculations, leaving Nigerians without a strong and credible alternative.

"The real danger before Nigeria is not simply bad governance, but the gradual weakening of democracy itself," the coalition declared.

At the heart of its intervention is what it describes as the Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition—the principle that no democracy can survive unless those in power are constantly challenged by a united, principled and credible opposition capable of peacefully replacing the government through the ballot.

To reinforce its position, the group drew parallels with defining moments in Nigeria's democratic journey, including the emergence of the G34 during the struggle against military dictatorship and the invocation of the Doctrine of Necessity during the constitutional crisis following the prolonged illness of late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

According to G100, those historic interventions succeeded because national interest was placed above personal and political considerations.

The coalition stressed that elections have little meaning where citizens are denied genuine choices, warning that democracies rarely collapse overnight but instead weaken gradually when opposition forces become fragmented and citizens lose confidence in the political process.

Presenting itself as a patriotic movement rather than a political platform, G100 said its mission is not to promote any particular presidential aspirant but to defend Nigerians' constitutional right to a vibrant democracy built on healthy political competition.

The coalition therefore challenged the country's leading opposition figures to immediately begin sincere negotiations aimed at presenting a united front in the 2027 elections.

Among those specifically addressed were Senator David Mark, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Seyi Makinde, Governor Bala Mohammed, Senator Seriake Dickson, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Mr. Donald Duke, Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, Prince Adewole Adebayo and other influential opposition leaders across the country.

The group reminded the political class that history ultimately honours leaders who place country above self, not those driven solely by personal ambition.

It concluded with a passionate appeal for opposition leaders to set aside their differences and forge a united political front capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative in 2027.

"We therefore call upon the leaders of the opposition to come together, negotiate in earnest and agree on how the 2027 election shall be prosecuted as a united front," the statement said.
