The High Chief Benjamin Chimaobi Eze Support Group has used Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary to call for intensified grassroots mobilisation in support of Eze’s candidacy for the 2027 House of Representatives election in the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.

In an Independence Anniversary statement, the group congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and said the celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and the importance of active participation by citizens in choosing their representatives.

The group said Eze, who hails from Udenu Local Government Area, had a strong case for the federal constituency’s seat based on the zoning understanding between Udenu and Igbo-Eze North.

It recalled that an agreement was reached in 2019 on the rotation of representation, with the understanding that Igbo-Eze North would occupy the position for 12 years before it returned to Udenu.

According to the group, the 12-year period has elapsed, comprising the eight years served by the incumbent representative, Hon. Dennis Agbo, and the four years served by Hon. Simon Atigwe.

It therefore argued that the 2027 election presents an opportunity for Udenu to take its turn in accordance with the understanding between the two local government areas.

The group further noted that Eze is currently the only candidate from Udenu among those seeking the federal constituency’s seat, describing the development as significant to his campaign.

It called on supporters and campaign volunteers to embark on extensive voter education and grassroots mobilisation, particularly in villages, communities and markets, to sensitise constituents on the history of representation and the zoning arrangement.

“Campaign is not done on social media. We need to go house to house, village to village and market to market. With this, we will get the people on our side by telling them what they need to know,” the statement said.

The group recalled that grassroots mobilisation played a role in political outcomes in the 2023 elections and urged supporters to adopt a similar approach ahead of the 2027 poll.

It also stressed the need for peaceful and lawful protection of votes, calling on the campaign organisation to recruit adequate polling-unit agents and train them on electoral procedures, voting and collation processes.

“The priority should be to ensure that the votes of constituents are properly cast, recorded and protected through lawful means. Let us work on this very important aspect,” the group said.

The group urged supporters to use the Independence Anniversary as a reminder of the importance of democracy, peaceful participation and respect for the rights of voters, while calling for a campaign centred on issues, grassroots engagement and the documented history of representation in the constituency.
