The political landscape of Enugu State is currently abuzz with a mix of skepticism and intrigue following the recent activities of Chief Uche Nnaji, the immediate past Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology. While Nnaji’s camp projects the image of a heavyweight contender for the 2027 governorship race, many seasoned observers are asking a more critical question: Is this a legitimate bid for the Lion Building, or is it the opening act of an elaborate "gaming scheme"?
Crowd funding theory:
Critics point to Nnaji’s tenure as Minister as the foundation of his current maneuverings. During his time in office, Nnaji oversaw a significant turnover of leadership across the 17 agencies under his ministry. Notably, he influenced the appointments of several Directors-General, including Prof. Nnanyelugo Ikemuonso of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN).
The prevailing theory among pundits is that Nnaji may be gambling on the goodwill—or perhaps the sense of obligation—of these appointees and other unsuspecting associates. The suspicion is that Nnaji is using the "specter" of a governorship run as a vehicle for crowdfunding.
To the wary, the pattern is familiar: generate enough political noise to attract "donations" from followers, settle a few loyalists, and quietly retreat from the radar once the coffers are full.
The Shadow of the Certificate Scandal
Perhaps the biggest hurdle to Nnaji’s credibility is the "moral and legal baggage" stemming from his abrupt exit from the federal cabinet. On October 7, 2025, Nnaji resigned following a damaging investigation into his academic credentials.
While he claimed his resignation was a "personal choice" to protect the sanctity of judicial proceedings, a Federal Government investigative panel recently confirmed the grim reality:
The Findings: The panel discovered Nnaji’s name was absent from the 1985 UNN graduation list.
The Evidence: Records showed correspondence from 1986 where Nnaji was still applying to re-sit a failed course (MCB 431 – Virology), long after he claimed to have graduated and completed his NYSC.
The Legal Tactic: Rather than producing a verified certificate, Nnaji has engaged in a "legal excursion," curiously suing for transcripts while attempting to block the university from releasing his records.
A "Nod" from the Villa or a "Leash" from the Law?
In a bid to convince his "sheepish" followers of his viability, Nnaji has reportedly boasted of a N400 billion war chest and a "green light" from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, the narrative contains a peculiar caveat.
Nnaji allegedly tells his inner circle that the President's "nod" comes with a condition: he must not run in any party that could threaten the President’s 2027 re-election.
This explains his tactical alignment with the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the PDP, a group that has openly signaled its support for the President’s second term. To observers, this looks less like a power move and more like a survival strategy for a man living on "presidential mercy" to avoid prosecution for forgery.
Integrity vs. The "Game Master"
While Nnaji’s "social media army" remains busy attacking the incumbent Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, many in Enugu are looking toward to Mbah's continuity in his solid works.
Immediately he was asked to resign by the presidency Nnaji engaged social media bloggers to use blame game tactics to obfuscate his certificate forgery saga. First they said it was Gov Mbah, who tampered with his certificates. Later they blamed Prof Simon Ortuanya accusing him of tampering with his academic documents. His media boys were all over the media celebrating Prof Ortuanya’s looming sack by the panel set up by Minister of Education on the petition by Uche Nnaji to the Ministry where he alleged that his academic records were tampered by the Vice Chancellor.
Then when the panel’s report came out and stated categorically that Uche Nnaji forged the UNN certificate he submitted to the National Assembly they shifted their media attacks to former colleagues of Uche Nnaji in APC whom they accused of betrayal for not decamping with him to PDP especially the former state chairman, Barr Ugochukwu Agballah, who seem to enjoy the confidence of an overwhelming majority of the old members of APC.
The blame game and reverse psychology was intended to paint the Fmr Minister as a saint and those he betrayed by engaging in forgery which obliterated their only choice of having a representative in FEC as betrayers. However the social media antics seems not to be achieving its purpose as over ninety percent of his former members and supporters in APC stoutly refused to follow him to PDP.
But even within the PDP, names like Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani (known as Arusi Akpofu), the billionaire businessman from Nkanu East, are already being whispered as the "real" potential contestants.
The Verdict: A High-Stakes Gamble
The governorship of Enugu State is a serious endeavor requiring:
Proven Integrity: Verifiable academic and professional records.
Economic Transparency: Wealth with a known, legitimate source and business address.
Ethical Standards: A reputation unsullied by criminal allegations.
For a man currently entangled in a confirmed forgery scandal, the move to "disturb the peace" of Enugu politics feels to many like a classic narcissistic ploy.
Whether Uche Nnaji is a "Game Master" looking for his next payout or a delusional dreamer, one thing is certain: Enugu’s resources are too precious to be entrusted to anyone whose primary skill is the "art of the scheme."
