Plateau Muslim who save 262 Christians dies at 90, buried
The Imam shielded the Christians during faith-based communal clashes that affected ten villages in Plateau State
Abubakar Abdullahi, the courageous Imam of Nghar village in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who shielded 262 Christians from attack during communal violence, has sadly passed away.
His death was confirmed on Friday by his son, Saleh Abubakar, in an interview with Daily Trust.
In June 2018, during violent, faith-based communal clashes that affected 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, Imam Abubakar sheltered 262 Christians in his mosque and residence until the violence subsided, saving them from certain death.
His bravery earned him widespread recognition, including the International Religious Freedom Award, presented by the United States Department of State in 2019.
While announcing his demise, Saleh stated that his father died on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos.
According to him, the cleric died ten days after being admitted to the hospital.
Saleh added: “He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem. He would go for check-ups and return. His health had been unstable since the heart disease diagnosis.”
Imam Abubakar was 90 years old. He is survived by 19 children—12 sons and seven daughters.
He has been laid to rest today, Friday, in Nghar village following Juma’at prayers.
