Rep Atu Visits Coal Camp After Drowning Incident, Calls for Safer Mining Communities

The member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has visited Aja-Agu Community in Coal Camp, Enugu, following the drowning of a resident, Ifeanyichukwu Asonye, at an abandoned coal mining site.

Asonye reportedly drowned at the abandoned mining location on Sunday evening, prompting renewed concerns over the safety of residents, particularly youths, around old and abandoned mining sites in the community.

During the visit, Atu inspected the scene and engaged with residents and community leaders on the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also sympathised with the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution around abandoned mining sites.

The lawmaker commended the Enugu State Government and the Chairman of Enugu North Local Government Area, Dr. Ibekaku, for their prompt intervention, which facilitated the recovery of the deceased.

Atu said the incident highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety measures and closer regulatory attention to abandoned mining sites and communities located around mining areas.

The lawmaker has previously sponsored a bill in the House of Representatives seeking to repeal the Nigeria Coal Corporation Act as part of efforts to modernise the legal framework governing coal and mining activities.

According to him, a contemporary regulatory framework should strengthen safety standards, promote responsible mining and protect communities hosting mining activities.

He noted that properly regulated coal mining could contribute to job creation and economic development in Enugu State, but stressed that economic benefits should not come at the expense of human safety, environmental protection and the wellbeing of host communities.

Atu added that the latest drowning incident reinforced the need to address hazards associated with abandoned mining sites and ensure adequate protection for communities affected by mining activities.

Meanwhile, President of the Coal Camp Youth Welfare Association, Comrade Chiedozie Emmanuel Umeadi, commended Atu for his prompt response and continued support for the community.

Also speaking, the Councillor representing Ogbete West Ward 6, Hon. Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Udom, praised the lawmaker for what he described as his consistent commitment to the people of Coal Camp.

Udom said Atu's visit demonstrated his willingness to identify with residents during difficult moments, particularly following the death of a member of the community.

He expressed appreciation to the lawmaker for visiting the bereaved family and engaging directly with residents, adding that his interventions had strengthened his relationship with the community.
