Alleged N100m fraud rocks Enugu Muslim community

The Sariki Hausawa community in Enugu state, Alhaji Suleiman Haruna Sule, and the Director of Islamic Centre Enugu, Alhaji Musa Ani spent last weekend in police detention in Enugu.

The duo were accused of conspiring to embezzle N100 million Islamic fund donated to the center.

But a human rights group, the Civil Rights Realization and Advancement Network (CRRAN), has petitioned the Enugu State Governor, the National Security Adviser, and Inspector General of Police, accusing the state police command of arbitrary detention.

When contacted, the Enugu State spokesman of the police, Daniel Ndukwe failed to pick his phone for clarification.

President of the human rights group, Olu Omotayo alleged that the police planned to arraign the suspects in a magistrate court.

According to the petition by Omotayo, Alhaji Musa Ani was arrested by the Police on Friday the 27th day of February 2026, at the Islamic Center Enugu over a petition written by one Alhaji Ezeani Ibrahim, one of the tenants of the shops situated in the premises of Islamic Center Enugu.

The Director of the Islamic Center, Ani, however said that the Center never received such large amount of funds from anywhere and only relies on offering money donated by the masses that come to pray there.

Omotayo quoted the detainees as saying that despite the explanation, the Police refused to admit him to bail.

He condemn the arrest and detention of citizens on Fridays by the Police in order to detain them over the weekend.

“This matter is purely a civil matter, because it is in-fighting or disagreement within the muslim Ummah in the mosque that led to the said trump up allegation against other members of the mosque.

“We demand the immediate release of the these senior citizens so that they can unite with their family to continue their religious obligations to God and their community in the month of Ramadan," Omotayo petitioned.
