Obeagu prospects for underground water in Isi-Uzo

The Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Hon. Obiora Obeagu has taken up the challenge of providing portable water supply in the council area.

Obeagu's desire was made manifest when he received a team of Hydrological group in his office at the Council headquarters, Ikem on Monday.

The group of Geological experts led by Prof. O. S. Onwuka from the Department of Geology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka were in the Council regarding groundwater exploration project across Isi-Uzo communities. 

The project also involving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), is being supported by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) under Geoscientists Without Borders (GWB) initiative and already have the nod of Enugu State's Ministries of Environment and Water Resources, respectively. 

Isi-Uzo, one of the oldest local government areas in Enugu State and Nigeria is worst hit in terms of portable water supply. 

Past efforts at sustainable solutions for clean and portable water, such as the Ikem treatment plant, failed due to some challenges in the area. 

Residents have continued to rely on polluted muddy rivers such as Ebenyi and Amanyi with risks of water borne diseases. 

Hon. Obeagu, who took the team on a physical tour and survey of some areas, including the Council and the Ikem General Hospital, said he would continue to partner with the Governor Peter Mbah administration for clean water and WASH projects for Isi-Uzo rural communities.

He disclosed his readiness to give every necessary support to the team, and also explore expanded partnership with the State and Federal Governments, including organisations like Water Aid Projects, to help solve the water problems in Isi-Uzo LGA.
