Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Adani Division in Uzo-uwani local government area, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, during the weekend, foiled a kidnapping attempt at the Ngene-Ukwu axis of the Adani–Nsukka Road.

There was intense gun duel with armed kidnapping suspects which resulted to death of one of the suspects while an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition was recovered.

Other members of the criminal gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

The command's spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe said that preliminary investigation revealed that the neutralised suspect and other members of the kidnapping gang had emerged from a nearby bush with the intent to kidnap occupants of a vehicle plying the route.

"Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, but the operatives responded with superior firepower, leading to the neutralisation of one of the kidnappers, while the others fled into the surrounding forest."

Ndukwe said that efforts have been intensified to trace, identify, and arrest the fleeing suspects, as well as dismantle the entire criminal network.

He urged members of the public, particularly residents and healthcare providers in the area, to promptly report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest Police Station or security formation.

Ndukwe noted that the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the joint operatives.

He reassured the public of the unwavering commitment of the Police and other security agencies to rid Enugu State of violent criminal elements and ensure the continued safety and security of all residents.
