Publisher, Emma Igwe, Raises Safety Concerns After Alleged Visit by Unidentified Men

A Journalist and Publisher of National Issue Newspaper, Chief Emmanuel Chidi Igwe, has raised concerns over his personal safety following what he described as a suspicious visit by unidentified men to his Abuja residence.

In a statement titled "Democracy, Dissent and My Safety Concerns," Igwe said the incident occurred a few days ago while he was away from home.

According to him, eyewitnesses reported that an unmarked vehicle and a white bus arrived at his residence, after which two men entered the compound. The men allegedly identified themselves as "Ifeanyi" and "Joshua" and claimed they were from the Ebonyi State Government House.

Igwe said a visitor at the residence asked the men to state the purpose of their visit and advised them to contact him directly by telephone if they genuinely wished to meet him. However, instead of explaining their mission or making the call, the men reportedly returned to their vehicles and drove away.

He noted that he has not received any official communication explaining the purpose of the visit, saying the development has heightened concerns for his personal safety.

The publisher linked his fears to his recent journalistic work on issues of public interest in Ebonyi State, including reports on alleged land grabbing in Abakaliki, disputes over his claimed ownership interest in Plot 110, Park Estate, Abakaliki, and questions surrounding land acquisition connected with the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) pocket layout.

According to Igwe, his reports have consistently advocated transparency, due process and the lawful resolution of disputes.

While expressing concern that his publications may have exposed him to risks, Igwe said he could not identify those responsible for the incident and urged security agencies to carry out a thorough and professional investigation.

He maintained that democracy thrives when citizens and journalists are free to express their views and demand accountability from public office holders.

"In a constitutional democracy, disagreement is neither a crime nor an act of hostility," he stated, adding that anyone who believes they have been defamed or wronged by a publication should seek legal redress through the courts rather than resort to intimidation, harassment or threats.

Igwe warned that any attempt to silence journalists or intimidate citizens would undermine the rule of law and weaken Nigeria's democratic values.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Ebonyi State Government regarding the allegations contained in Igwe's statement.
