APC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL: NON-INCLUSION OF NWIFURU — AN EARLY WARNING SIGNAL
Ordinarily, the absence of a governor from a national campaign structure does not, by itself, establish a political disagreement. But politics is often about signals, symbolism and relationships.

THE NWIFURU QUESTION
The composition of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election may have opened a new political conversation in Ebonyi State, particularly over the relationship between Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the Presidency.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, unveiled the APC Presidential Campaign Council on Saturday. But for political observers in Ebonyi, one omission has attracted particular attention: Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru does not appear among the named principal members of the council.
Ordinarily, the absence of a governor from a national campaign structure does not, by itself, establish a political disagreement. But politics is often about signals, symbolism and relationships.
In Ebonyi, the omission is already generating questions because it comes against the background of several developments that have continued to fuel speculation about Nwifuru's standing with the Tinubu Presidency.
THE WIKE QUESTION
Only a few months ago, Governor Nwifuru reportedly used an endorsement rally in Abakaliki to address rumours that President Tinubu had allegedly ceded Ebonyi State politically to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The fact that the governor found it necessary to publicly address such speculation was itself an indication that questions about political control and influence in Ebonyi had entered the public conversation.
Now, with the emergence of the national campaign council, political watchers are asking a simple question: Where does Nwifuru stand in the emerging architecture of the Tinubu 2027 campaign?
THE FLYOVER MESSAGE
Another development that has attracted attention was President Tinubu's recent engagement with stakeholders from Oyo State.
During the interaction, Tinubu advised governors to concentrate more on roads and infrastructure that directly address the needs of the people rather than constructing flyovers in locations where there is little vehicular traffic.
In political circles in Ebonyi, some have interpreted that message through the prism of the controversial Vanco Junction flyover and tunnel project in Abakaliki.
The project was flagged off in May 2024, but more than two years later, it remains unfinished.
Whether or not Tinubu's statement was directed at Ebonyi is impossible to establish from the statement itself. Any claim that the President was specifically referring to Nwifuru would therefore be speculative.
But politically, the timing has created room for interpretation.
THE PERFORMANCE QUESTION
The bigger issue is not merely the Vanco flyover.
It is the growing perception among sections of the Ebonyi electorate that the state government has not matched the enormous expectations created by its political rhetoric and financial resources.
Supporters of the administration will point to roads and other projects. Critics, however, argue that some of the administration's major flagship projects have become symbols of promises yet to be fully delivered.
This is where politics becomes dangerous for an incumbent.
Governments are ultimately judged not by the volume of announcements they make but by what citizens can physically see, touch and use.
And as the 2027 political season approaches, every unfinished major project becomes part of the opposition's campaign vocabulary.
ENTER CHIEF IFEANYI CHUKWUMA ODII
Against this backdrop, the emergence of Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii as a leading opposition figure in Ebonyi has changed the political calculation.
For many Ebonyians dissatisfied with the direction of government, Odii is increasingly being presented by his supporters as a possible alternative — a candidate who could convert public dissatisfaction into a political movement.
His supporters argue that what Ebonyi needs is not simply another political administration but a government that places completion of projects, economic opportunity, employment, human capital development and direct impact on citizens above political symbolism.
That narrative could become increasingly powerful if the APC administration enters the 2027 election cycle with several high-profile projects still incomplete.
THE EARLY WARNING SIGNAL
The non-inclusion of Nwifuru in the Presidential Campaign Council should therefore be treated carefully.
It is not proof of a break between the governor and President Tinubu. It is also not proof that the Presidency has abandoned the Ebonyi governor.
But politically, it is an early warning signal that deserves attention.
The real test will be what happens next.
Will Nwifuru receive a prominent role in the eventual state campaign structure? Will Abuja continue to publicly embrace his administration? Will the Presidency's major political figures continue to rally around him? Or will new political actors increasingly emerge as preferred partners for the 2027 project in Ebonyi?
Those questions cannot be answered by one campaign council list.
But they can no longer be ignored.
For Nwifuru, the message from the unfolding political environment is straightforward: 2027 will not be fought only in Abakaliki. Abuja will matter. Performance will matter. Public perception will matter. And unfinished promises will matter even more.
For Ebonyians, meanwhile, the choice may ultimately become a referendum not merely on personalities, but on which political leadership can transform the state's enormous resources and opportunities into tangible improvements in the lives of its people.
And that is where the growing political relevance of Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii may become difficult for the ruling establishment to ignore.
THE 2027 BATTLE HAS NOT BEGUN IN EARNEST. BUT THE WARNING LIGHTS ARE ALREADY FLASHING.
