Rep Atu Marks 3 Years in Office, Highlights Achievements
Atu said the mandate given to him by the people of Enugu South and Enugu North comes with an obligation to account for his performance
Hon. Chimaobi Atu, member representing Enugu South and Enugu North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has presented an account of his stewardship as he marks three years in office.
Speaking on his three-year anniversary, Atu said the mandate given to him by the people of Enugu South and Enugu North comes with an obligation to account for his performance. “I believe that tomorrow will be better but it starts today,” he said.
*Education and Scholarships*
Atu said education remains a key focus of his representation. He disclosed that no fewer than 800 scholarships have been awarded to constituents, separate from support for NECO and WAEC examinations.
In tertiary education, he said laboratory facilities at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been equipped. Science laboratories in secondary schools across the constituency also received upgrades, while basic laboratories were installed in several primary schools. Coal Camp Primary School, described as the oldest primary school in Enugu, was listed among the beneficiaries. The lawmaker added that Federal Government College, Enugu, also received support.
*Youth Empowerment and Agriculture*
On youth development, Atu said 150 youths were trained in chemical production, while over 200 youths received training in Artificial Intelligence to align with global technological changes. Beneficiaries also received empowerment support after the training.
In agriculture, he said farmers and women involved in agricultural production received encouragement and incentives to boost food production.
*Health, Infrastructure, and Security*
The lawmaker said medical outreaches were conducted in several communities, including Iva Valley, Obeagu Ndiuno, and Independence Layout, with emphasis on rural areas with limited access to healthcare.
To address insecurity, he said solar-powered lights were installed across all 26 wards of the constituency to improve visibility and deter criminal activity.
On infrastructure, Atu said roads with drainages were constructed, particularly in areas he said had been neglected by government. He noted that the projects are open to public scrutiny and investigation.
*Legislative Duties and National Issues*
Atu described motions and bills as his primary legislative assignment. He defended the National Assembly’s approval of loans for the Tinubu administration, saying the aim was to provide funds to resolve problems affecting Nigerians.
He also spoke on national development projects, stating that dredging of the River Niger is part of ongoing seaport development efforts. On railway infrastructure, he urged citizens to protect public assets, saying Nigerians are responsible for some of the vandalism and that security is a collective responsibility.
The lawmaker said the South East Development Commission (SEDC) is aware of the constituency’s priorities and that whatever the commission chooses will become his top priority.
“My personal challenge is how we can do good for the people,” Atu stated.
