PPP Deal: Abia Attracts $145m Solar Manufacturing Investment
Gov Alex Oti of Abia state

An indigenous firm, MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, has unveiled plans to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing plant in Abia State through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with the state government.

The proposed facility will be sited at Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area and is expected to manufacture solar panels and other renewable energy equipment.

Speaking during a visit to Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the leader of the investor delegation, Oko Jaja, said the project is being executed in partnership with Chinese technical collaborators. He noted that Abia's improving business climate and ongoing infrastructure development influenced the company's decision to invest in the state.

Jaja revealed that the project's first tranche of funding is scheduled for release in September 2026, after which construction will commence.

Governor Otti welcomed the investment proposal, describing it as a strong endorsement of the state's economic reforms and investor-friendly policies.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the project, saying the administration remains focused on creating an environment where businesses can flourish.

"I'm glad you have reached the final investment decision involving about $145 million. This is what we stand for—creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and for investors to thrive," the governor said.

The Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, Dennis Nwakanma, disclosed that representatives of the company's foreign technical partners had already inspected the proposed site as part of pre-construction activities.

According to him, the factory will not only boost local production of solar panels and related equipment but also create employment opportunities and enhance technical skills among young Nigerians.

He added that selected employees will undergo advanced training in China to strengthen local expertise in solar technology manufacturing.

When completed, the project is expected to expand Nigeria's renewable energy manufacturing capacity while positioning Abia State as a key hub for solar technology production.
