Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, saying the people of the state have spoken with “courage and clarity.”

Obi, in a statement titled “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” posted on his X handle on Sunday, said Adeleke had earned the renewed confidence of the people through his commitment to their welfare and his achievements in office.

He said the outcome of the election reaffirmed the people’s constitutional right to choose their leaders, describing the victory as an important moment for democracy.

“I warmly congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election and the good people of Osun State on this important democratic victory,” Obi said.

According to him, the people of Osun had demonstrated that “the power to choose their leaders belongs to the people,” adding that Adeleke had been entrusted with their mandate once again.

The former Anambra State governor also commended the youths of Osun State for what he described as their courage, vigilance and peaceful defence of the democratic process.

“I particularly commend the courageous youths of Osun who rose to the occasion and peacefully defended their democratic mandate,” he said.

Obi maintained that the major lesson from the Osun election was the need for citizens to remain alert and actively protect their votes, stressing that democracy could only thrive when citizens took their civic responsibilities seriously.

He further called on Nigerians to remain politically engaged as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, urging them to register, vote and ensure that their votes count.

“The Nigerian people are the ones experiencing hunger, deprivation, insecurity, and hardship; therefore, they are also the ones with the power, through their votes, to bring about the change that will end these conditions,” Obi said.

He also appealed to political actors to put the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations and embrace peace, unity and the rule of law.

According to him, elections should not be treated as battles of violence but as contests based on ideas, competence, character and service.

Obi expressed hope that the Osun experience would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process and inspire citizens across the country to remain vigilant and committed to building a “just, secure, prosperous, and truly people-centred nation.”
