The jailed member of Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr. Bright Ngene (Esq) of the Labour Party (LP), has been returned to the hallowed chamber by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His return followed his declaration, on Tuesday, as the authentic winner of the 2023 House of Assembly election for Enugu South Urban State constituency.

His declaration was however not without turbulence as he was finally authenticated as winner after several rerun elections that never held.

His declaration brings to an end the crisis that has trailed every attempt to conduct the rerun which was ordered by an Appeal Court.

Last Saturday, there were disruptions at the polling units earmarked for the polls, leading to a verbal confrontation between supporters of various political parties such as the, LP, PDP and the APC.

However, in an update provided on Tuesday, INEC has now declared Ngene as the winner.

The update was signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee.

He said, "Two re-run elections by order of the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals were held in Enugu and Kano States.

"After previous disruptions of the elections in the two States by violence and thuggery, the elections have now been concluded. Declaration and return were made by the Returning Officers.

"For the Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Enugu State, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) was declared winner."

Bright Ngene is currently serving seven years prison sentence in a mater that many believe is political and in connection for the House of Assembly seat.

How the "prisoner" will be returned to the House of Assembly is what spectators are now watching. But Daily Insider was informed that an appeal of the magistrate court decision that sentenced him is on and if merit is found in the appeal, charges on Barrister Bright Ngene may be quashed for his safe return to the House of Assembly after two years deluge.
