The Police in Anambra State have arrested Ejike Ofoegbu, owner and publisher of _Igbo Times Magazine_ and _iNews_, over controversial publications alleged to be defamatory of the state’s leadership.

Ofoegbu, who had earlier issued a public retraction and apology, is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow to face formal charges.

The scandal and the retraction

The arrest follows the circulation of a series of posts that targeted *Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo* and members of his immediate family. The materials, which spread rapidly on social media, were widely criticized for breaching journalistic ethics and for allegedly containing malicious falsehood.

As backlash mounted, Ofoegbu released a graphic titled “Public Apology and Full Retraction.” In the signed statement, he said:

“I remain committed to responsible journalism, truth, and the trust of my readers. Thank you, and God bless Anambra State.”

The apology was directed to Governor Soludo, his family, and the general public. While some outlets published the retraction and his plea for leniency, state authorities have proceeded with legal action.

Legal implications

Legal experts say a public apology may help in civil matters but does not automatically remove criminal liability.

Under Nigeria’s *Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act* and relevant provisions of state criminal codes on criminal defamation and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace, prosecutors can still pursue charges even after a retraction.

_Igbo Times Magazine_ has previously been flagged by media watchdogs for publishing unverified and volatile political narratives. Analysts say the arrest signals a growing resolve by authorities to crack down on targeted disinformation against public officials.

Arraignment set for tomorrow

Security sources confirmed that the case file has been processed. Ofoegbu will be brought before a magistrate or high court tomorrow, where the specific charges will be read to him.
