Key figures within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape convened an emergency high-level meeting, on Wednesday, signaling rising strategic recalibration amid concerns that major opposition political parties could face possible disenfranchisement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The closed-door meeting brought together leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), underscoring growing urgency among opposition stakeholders.

Recall that the ADC on Wednesday protested at INEC office on the de-recognition of the David Mark-led leadership of the party.

The PDP delegation was led by its National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, while prominent figures including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were also in attendance.

The meeting took place at the residence of former Senate President David Mark, who hosted a cross-section of influential political actors from both parties and beyond.

Sources familiar with the discussions described the engagement as part of “intensifying consultations” among opposition leaders, driven by mounting apprehension over political developments that could limit their participation or competitiveness in the upcoming elections.

While details of the deliberations remain undisclosed, analysts say the gathering may point to early-stage coalition-building efforts or strategic alliances aimed at safeguarding democratic participation and strengthening opposition unity.

The talks come at a time of heightened political activity nationwide, with parties repositioning themselves ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 electoral cycle.

Observers note that any perceived threat of disenfranchisement could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, potentially prompting legal battles, institutional confrontations, or the emergence of new political blocs.

As consultations continue, attention is likely to remain fixed on whether these discussions will translate into a formal coalition or a coordinated response capable of influencing the trajectory of Nigeria’s next general elections.
