The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed two separate murder incidents involving beheadings that occurred on May 15, 2026, in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe said that a 40-year-old man, Anikwe Onyebuchi, allegedly used a cutlass to behead and kill his 60-year-old mother, Anikwe Felicia, at Nkporogwu Ukehe Community at about on Friday.

Ndukwe disclosed that the operatives from the Igbo-Etiti local government Division responded to the report, recovered the corpse and severed head, and took them to a hospital where doctors confirmed the death.

The remains were deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The suspect, Onyebuchi, he noted was rescued from an angry mob that had beaten him and was taken to hospital for treatment before being rearrested.

Police said a full-scale investigation into the incident has commenced.

In a second incident reported the same day, a man identified as Joshua Eze allegedly used a cutlass to behead his sister, Nwabuche Eze, and her daughter, Favour Eze, at Agu-Ekwegbe Community.

Officers from the Command’s Distress Response Squad at Ekwegbe Junction responded to a distress call and recovered the bodies, which were confirmed dead at a hospital and deposited in the mortuary.

Eze was also rescued from a mob in critical condition and taken to hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. His body was deposited in the mortuary.

Ndukwe said that preliminary investigations revealed that after the killings, Eze allegedly buried the victims in a shallow grave alongside a dead white cock, suggesting possible ritual intentions, police said.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the acts as “baric” and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct comprehensive investigations into both incidents.

Giwa urged residents to refrain from jungle justice and to report criminal suspects to the police or other lawful authorities.
