Issues on Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), plea bargain and remand proceedings formed matters of tense deliberations in a two-day Kogi State Ministry of Justice seminar held in Lokaja, recently.
Themed "Prospects and Challenges of the Kogi State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), 2017: Charting a Way Forward," the legal minds resolved for improved justice delivery in the state.
The Ministry of Justice reiterated its commitment to ongoing engagement with stakeholders to create a more efficient, fair, and people-centered criminal justice system in Kogi State.
Stakeholders in the criminal justice sector evaluated the implementation of the ACJL, identified challenges, and propose solutions for enhanced justice delivery in the state.
The state Chief Judge, Hon. Justice J.J. Majebi, High Court Judges, law officers from the Ministry of Justice, and representatives from various security agencies were all in attendance.
The Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Hajia Falilat Yusuf, highlighted the significance of the seminar in fortifying the justice system; while the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Muizudeen Yunus Abdullahi, SAN, underscored the necessity for collaboration among the Judiciary, Police, and Ministry of Justice to ensure the seamless administration of criminal justice.
He emphasized the pivotal role of the ACJL (2017) in promoting efficiency, fairness, and swift dispensation of justice, while also acknowledging the existing challenges that need immediate attention.
Throughout the seminar, seasoned legal experts presented insightful papers on critical topics such as plea bargaining, remand proceedings, and obtaining extra-judicial statements from suspects.
The discussions delved deep into the successes and areas needing reform under the ACJL (2017), with a particular focus on standardizing the application of plea bargaining and ensuring compliance with human rights standards.
In his remarks, the Attorney General, Abdullahi, expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his steadfast support to the Ministry of Justice and dedication to enhancing justice delivery in Kogi State.
He praised the Governor's commitment to initiatives that strengthen the rule of law and improve access to justice for all citizens.
The seminar concluded on a high note, with participants leaving equipped with renewed strategies to tackle challenges and enhance the implementation of the ACJL (2017).
