MASSOB Disregards Nigerian Army Counter directive on Biafra Day Memorial Prayers
MASSOB advise churches in Biafra land to disregard the statements of Nigeria Army. Don’t allow yourself to be defeated by devil
The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has criticized the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army for describing its directive to churches in “Biafra land” to hold memorial services for victims of the 1967–70 civil war as “irresponsible and provocative”.
In a press statement issued by its leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, on Friday, MASSOB said it was shocked that national memorial prayers could be labelled an offence.
“When has national memorial prayers become an offence or irresponsible? Nigeria Army should cover their faces in shame,” the statement said.
MASSOB accused the Army of not describing the activities of Islamic bandits in the North and West as provocative.
The group urged churches in the South-East and parts of the South-South to disregard the Army’s statement and proceed with planned prayers on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
“MASSOB advise churches in Biafra land to disregard the statements of Nigeria Army. Don’t allow yourself to be defeated by devil. Let Nigeria Army channel their antagonism to Islamic terrorist bandits ravaging northern and western Nigeria," Madu said
MASSOB emphasized that it remains a non-violent movement committed to self-determination through internationally recognized means. “The foundation of MASSOB is rooted on the principles of non violence. We have never killed or repaid the Nigeria security agencies for the extra judicial killings of our non violence members,” Madu said.
The group warned the Army that its stance would not push MASSOB into violence. “We know that you’re jittery and uncomfortable with the reality of Biafra actualization and restoration,” the statement added.
MASSOB also called on Biafrans to observe a sit-at-home on Saturday, May 30, to mark the 59th anniversary of the Biafra declaration by the late Gen. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and to attend special prayers in churches on Sunday for victims of the war.
